CCNY 2014 Darkroom Resident Artist Talks

On the Road with Victoria Sambunaris

Last winter, I was invited by American Photo On Campus to interview a mentor for a piece in which our images would appear side-by-side. Victoria Sambunaris and I met in fall 2009 during a meet-up organized by Women in Photography at the Half King in Chelsea. Our shared wanderlust and fascination with American realities led to an exchange of e-mails and conversations over the last five years about the desires and many challenges that surround making our work. My interview with Vicky was recently published on American Photo's website, On the Road with Victoria Sambunaris: Photographer Tema Stauffer interviews her mentor. 

Vicky will be presenting a talk on Thursday, March 20th at 7pm at the School of Visual Arts Amphitheater through the Camera Club of New York's lecture series. I'm honored to have this opportunity to introduce her to the audience with two of my classes in attendance.

Transgressor Magazine recently published Borderline: On the Road with Vicky Sambunaris, a selection of new images made in South Texas near the border of Mexico accompanied by some of her insights. The most exciting news is the upcoming publication of her first monograph, Victoria Sambunaris: Taxonomy of a Landscape by Radius Books scheduled for release in April 2014. A huge and heartfelt congratulations to Vicky on this momentous accomplishment from a devoted friend and admirer.

PDNedu Project X: Help-Portrait

PDNedu's Spring 2014 digital edition is live this week, including a short Project X piece I wrote about Anthony Aquino, a high school photo teacher in upstate New York who organized Help-Portrait events at a local soup kitchen where his students set up a make-shoft studio and gave portraits to the community. Founded by Jeremy Cowart, Help-Portrait is a global movement of photographers and other volunteers who provide portraits to people in need in communities around the world.

2014 CCNY Darkroom Residency

Thank you to CCNY board and staff John Stanley, Allen Frame, and Saul Robbins and jurors Daniel Handal, Cara Phillips, and Anna Shteynshleyger for selecting me to participate in the 2014 CCNY Darkroom Residency Program. Congratulations to the other three photographers chosen for the residency this year: Ido Abramsohn, Patricia Voulgaris, and Ji Yeo. I look forward to starting my residency this month and working towards the completion of the Paterson documentary portrait series.

Entering its 8th year, the CCNY Darkroom Residency Program provides participating artists with three (3) months of free access to CCNY’s darkrooms, digital work stations, and shooting studio. The CCNY Darkroom Residency Program is made possible by generous support from Fujifilm; Kodak; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; Foundation for Contemporary Arts; and The Jerome Foundation.

Photography Sampler at Ramapo College

Photography Sampler, a group exhibition of work by four photographers, opens tonight at the Pascal Gallery in the Berrie Center from Performing and Visual Arts at Ramapo College. Participating photographers are Eva Fazarri, Jose Hernandez, Dina Kantor and Tema Stauffer.  The exhibition is on view through October 18th.

Contributing photographers were announced yesterday for the upcoming digital exhibition, MAKING PICTURES OF PEOPLE, curated by Andy Adams for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in conjunction with About Face, a traditional exhibition of current portraiture opening in August 2013.

Gas Station, Tampa, Florida, 2007 is included in the current group exhibition, ten, at Jen Bekman Gallery in New York celebrating the tenth anniversary of the gallery and the artists who were influential its story. The exhibition features work by Mara Bodis Wollner, Peter Haakon Thompson, Dana Miller, Alec Soth, Amy Stein, and many others.  American Stills was exhibited in a solo show with Jen Bekman Gallery in 2004, and this is my eighth group show with the gallery since it opened a decade ago.  There is a reception on Friday, March 15 from 6-8pm. 

Exhibition and Artist Talk in Montreal

Four images from American Stills are included in an upcoming group show at Galerie Lilian Rodriguez in Montreal opening Saturday, March 2nd.  Curated by Marisa Portolese, The Body and the Landscape is a contemporary photographic exhibition that brings together the work of an eclectic group of women artists that explore different permutations of the figure in the landscape and whose practices revolve around the genre of portraiture, the romanticized landscape and gendered space.  Exhibiting artists are Jessica Auer (Canada), Jasmine Bakalarz (Argentine), Margaret Haines (Canada/USA), Jinyoung Kim (Canada/Korea), Celia Perrin Sidarous (Canada), and Tema Stauffer (USA).

In conjunction with the exhibition, I will present an artist talk at Concordia University on Thursday, February 28th at 1:30pm.  Many thanks to Fine Arts faculty members Marisa Portolese and Genevieve Cadieux for making this possible.

PAUSE at Foley Gallery

Eva Fazarri from All That Remains 

Foley Gallery presents a week-long group exhibition of photographs by six artists who graduated from Pratt: Eva Fazzari, Peter Riesett, Rachel Longosch, Austin Nelson, I-Hsuen Chen, and Liang-pin Tsao. According to Allen Frame, these six photographers "stalk the space of nowhere, anywhere, and somewhere and arrive 'here' in the eerie calm of Pause, their exhibition of photographs depicting lives and landscapes on hold, barren, bleak, forgotten, anonymous, abandoned, and random.  Their views of the world are rooted in memory and marked by transience.  They are travelers poking into voids, looking at emptiness, examining the anxiety of unresolved questions.  The artists are melancholic progeny, gazing at the family tree after it's been chopped down, and unfolding maps to forgotten places."

The exhibition includes selections from I-Hsuen Chen's Nowhere in Taiwan series that was featured in Culturehall's New Artists Feature, Winter 2012.
