Visiting Artist Talk at Concordia University / Susan Worsham / February 3rd

American photographer Susan Worsham will be presenting an artist talk to Concordia's Photography program on Wednesday, February 3rd at 1:30pm.  The talk will take place in EV 3.655 and is free and open to the public followed by a Q&A and studio visits with graduate students in photography.

Where Do You Sleep? is a cause-related photographic art project supported and sponsored by the City of Montréal. Ten photographers were selected to contribute varying works exploring their visions of homelessness.

During the summer of 2015, Tema Stauffer photographed interiors of homeless shelters throughout the city of Montréal. The question posed by the project led her to examine the accommodations provided by local organizations dedicated to protecting and supporting the homeless and other individuals in crisis or transition. Variations in funding and capacity influence the kinds of environments these organizations are capable of providing as an alternative to the streets. These range from private bedrooms to large, shared rooms with many beds, as well as the pews of a downtown church where the homeless rest during weekdays.

The photographs selected for the first exhibition on display in the Hall of Honor at Montréal's City Hall from October 31st to November 12th, 2015 portray rooms at Mission Old Brewery, Projets Autochtones du Québec (PAQ), and Maison de Pére. Thank you to the organizations and their directors and staff who generously opened their doors to this project, also including Nazareth House, Anne's House, Chez Doris, Auberge Madeleine, Le Chainon, Native Women's Shelter, Welcome Hall Mission, and the Open Door Church.

Elena Dorfman's Portraits of Syria's Lost Generation

PATERSON exhibition at Baxter Street at the CCNY opening Saturday, June 6th

An exhibition of 12 prints from my Paterson portrait series is opening on June 6th at Baxter Street at the Camera Club of New York's new gallery space in Chinatown.  This solo show is the culmination of my workspace residency last spring in New York before I left the country for a teaching position in Canada.  The portrait of Jhozali on Straight Street in May 2014 is the last photograph I shot in Paterson.  Thank you to the community of Paterson for making this work possible and to the CCNY and Jerome Foundation for supporting the production of these exhibitions prints.

Alexis Desgagnés' presentation to photo students at Concordia University

Thank you to Montreal-based photographer and writer Alexis Desgagnés for a thoughtful and generous presentation today to Concordia students in Photographic Visions: Theory and Practice II. Alexis discussed his past experiences as artistic director of VU Photo in Quebec City and his current work as assistant editor of the stunning Canadian photography magazine Ciel Variable, as well as topics such as producing photo books, writing about photography, developing artist communities, and taking intiative to find creative and authentic ways to survive in the arts.  Best quote: "You are artists. You're not bureaucrats. You're not in the army."

Lecture on Paterson, New Jersey at Ramapo College

I’ll be giving a presentation on Friday, November 7th to an art history class at Ramapo College on photographic representations of Paterson, New Jersey over the course of several decades.  The lecture combines selections from my portrait series in Paterson with images from George Tice’s Paterson I and Paterson II, as well as documentary photographs by Martha Cooper, Susan Levitas, and others shot for the Working in Paterson Project in the archives of the Library of Congress.  This collection of around 4,000 photographs shot in Paterson in 1994 studies ways in which community life and values are shaped by work and how the theme of work intersects with themes of family, ethnicity, gender, neighborhood, and change over time.  Thank you to Professor Meredith Davis for the invitation to speak to her class and to George Tice for contributing additional Paterson images from his publication, Seldom Seen, for this occasion.

The Telephone Show

White Horse is included in The Telephone Show, an exhibition of work by seventeen photographers organized by Matt Rahner for The Craft Studio Gallery at the University of Missouri.  The show is on view from October 27th - November 7th and is accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by Travis Shaffer.

Hello from Montreal!  I've recently relocated from New York City and have started a new teaching position as LTA Assistant Professor of Photography in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. I'm thrilled to be working with Marisa Portolese, Genevieve Cadieux, Raymonde April, Evergon, and other Fine Arts faculty.  I will continue to post photo news from time-to-time.
